Cartouchage (or cartonne/carton) is an old passementerie term for card shapes covered in silk. These shapes are often seen as tassel embellishments, creating petal shapes over the tassel. They are also used to create rosettes and other embellishments, as well as for free standing ornaments such as flowers.
A coil of wire is used on its own or threaded onto a straight wire (in the same way as ganutell petals are made) and the card placed inside. The shape is then wrapped in a very fine silk thread. An alternative is to stretch fine silk fabric over the shape.
These shapes can also be used as padding in embroidery, or covered in fabric for decorative applique.
As a general guide the coils should be relative to the thread used. A fine thread should be used with a fine wire coil.
