- Description
These little dolls made from fabric and threass are often hung from mobiles for Hinamatsuri (Girls' Day) in Japan. They have many regional names, some of which, such as tsurushikazari, are difficult for the English speaker. As recommended by a Japanese friend, we chose Sagemon, which is from the Yanagawa area, as it is easier to remember in English.
Crane : Tsuru
The crane is one of the most popular motifs in Japanese art. It mates for life and is said to live for a thousand years. It symbolises honour, longevity and good health, good fortune and loyalty. It is considered lucky to see a crane because of their beautiful appearance.
Seven types of crane can be found in Japan, and the red-crowned crane is perhaps the most familiar.
This tool will help you to accurately mark the pieces for two cranes, one which has a folded appearance like the traditional origami paper cranes.
